Society and Gender

August 30, 2007

Gender as mentioned in the book Communicating Gender Diversity is one of the ingredients that affects who a person is and what they become. It affects a person’s social life also. Gender is in the mind. It is what a person thinks they are or should be. A person’s self-image affect their masculine or feminine characteristics, a person’s attitude, and behavior. It can often have an impact on the way a person dresses. What does it mean to be masculine or feminine? What or what determines what is masculine or feminine clothing, behavior, and mannerism? Society and the media typically do. Society assumed what was considered masculine.
Our society is based on stereotypes. If we were to go across the ocean somewhere to a different country, we might see different things than we see in America. For example, last year in a class entitled Gendered Lives, we learned about a cultural group in which males wore what we consider to be girly or feminine things. The men wore jewelry such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and even chains connected to a belly button ring. Men also wore skirts or wraps around their waists. In the United States, because of what we have always learned, majority of people would probably see those men as gay or homosexual or think they are trying to act like women. However, they are not. That is just another stereotype created by the media which is ingrained into our society. They just like to dress up. It is the way they attract women in their culture. Things are apparently crossing over. Females nowadays wear boy type underwear. Some girls are wearing the same clothes guys are wearing from time to time, but they are not confused, not gay. They just love to be comfortable. So does that mean they are masculine or have masculine characteristics? I believe there is a gray area.
