Music – Strong Women

October 14, 2007

Did you know that nowadays women in hip-hop and rap have been seen as hard core? Is it possibly because they have street smarts and are not afraid to speak their minds? Most people probably think that men rappers are only seen with power and as hard core and masculine, but it’s not true. Women who are rappers or hip-hop singers tend to have power also and are aware of the differences between men and women but don’t let it stop them from doing what they do best which is make music.  They also represent symbols for women.  Some of them demand ultimate respect  and express their dominance and not submissiveness to others.  Most of these ideas are associated with black women.

Of course these women are seen negatively too by critics and other people who observe them as well as themselves. Some women rappers tend to refer to themselves as bitches (a derogatory term used to refer to women). Why? One reason is because they are aware of what they are possibly seen as by others. Lil Kim, for instance, refers to herself as a bitch because she grew up on the streets and that is what men and others have referred to her as. She says in one of her most famous songs “I’m a bitch!” She even calls herself the sexy “Queen Bitch”. She uses the word bitch to represent her empowerment and her sexual femininity. Whereas most people reject the term bitch as a name for a woman, Lil Kim, like many other female rappers accept and welcome the term bitch. Lil Kim is fiesty and bold. She is also rebellious. She rejects the negative implications of the words and thinks of them as positive and therefore embraces them. Lil Kim like some other rappers such as Foxy Brown, Rah Digga, and Lauren Hill, teach their audience that men are not always dominant and women should not always be submissive. Through their music they also teach their audience to respect them and that power is in the hands of those who believe it whether male or female.

Tattoos

October 14, 2007

Why has tattooing become associated with masculinity? Alot of peopel such as people in gangs get tattoos to display how hard they are or things they have done. One of the most famous tattoos of people who have killed someone or lost someone close are the tear tattoos. Each tear represents someone the person killed. For example, famous rapper Lil Wayne has 3 tears under his eyes. So in that case tattoos represent symbolicly criminality and masculinity. However, other people get tattoos such as guys in fraternities or people in the military. Also other people get tattoos to represent something religiously such as Indian people.

Aside from tattoos in some cases being associated with masculinity or representing negative connotations. Women also get tattoos that are seen as negative as well such as the famously known ”tramp stamp” which many have become knowledgeable about which is the tattoo right above the butt and on the lower back area. Just as men and their tattoo meanings, women have positive reasons for having tattoos also.

Women get tattoos as makeup. It was mentioned that women get eyeliner tattooed on and lipliner permanently tattooed on. It may be weird for some people but for the particular woman, it turns out to be a good thing probably especially for those that don’t have eyebrows and want them. It’s probably a relief to know that they can get some permanently tattooed on. Despite the connotations both positive and negative attached to tattooing, some tattoos considered to be criminal or negative can keep a person from getting a job especially when they are noticeable such as on the face or uncovered body parts. So a little personal advice, if you’re thinking about going into the medical field or other important corporate job areas, it is best not to get a tattoo that can be seen.

Crush Video

October 14, 2007

The little video we watched in class called Crush was somewhat interesting for a few reasons. It provided a view of girls and boys and boys and boys. It wasn’t biased or one-sided. It pretty much showed how boys grow up and think the same way as girls in a way. I guess you could say it provided us with an inside look on how much homosexual relationships are like heterosexual relationships. However, I had one issue with the movie that I am not used to seeing any other time in the media. Usually women are presented as passive and not aggressive. However, the girl in this video was more aggressive than passive and one of the boys was passive. When the little girl found out her friend who she liked – liked boys, she had to look beyond his looks and loving personality and accept his choice and decision. Although the actions of people in the movie were a little weird and strange, the video was good for teaching us to accept people whether they are homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual. It basically shows that your friends may make different decisions than you make in their lives, but that we should accept them for who they are not what they like.
